Thoroughbreds earn first league win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Behind a strong performance on the mound in game one, the Skidmore College softball team earned its first Liberty League win, splitting the Friday afternoon doubleheader with RIT at Wagner Park.

Skidmore won game one 4-0, while RIT picked up the 4-2 win in game two.

Skidmore's record stands at 13-11 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League. RIT's record is 4-10 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Amanda Carilli (10-4) powered the Thoroughbreds in the circle with a two-hit shutout in game one, needing 75 pitches to earn her 10th victory of the season. She struck out a pair of batters. Skidmore and RIT were locked in a pitcher's duel through three innings, but the Thoroughbreds struck in the bottom of the fourth, a one-out double by Adrianna Garcia scoring Kristina Foley from first base. Jill Strileckis in the next at bat hit a looping single over first base, scoring Garcia to double the lead.

In the fifth, consecutive RBI singles by Emily Popp and Foley would give Skidmore the 4-0 lead. The Thoroughbreds had a chance to end the game early via the eight run rule, with the bases loaded with one out, but RIT's Melissa Gould pitched out of the jam, limiting the damage. The Thoroughbreds would cruise from there to earn their first league win.

Foley would go a perfect 2-for-2, driving and scoring a run. She also walked. Karly Fishkin went 2-for-3, scoring a run as well. The Thoroughbreds would draw five walks as a team in game one. Lizette Roman-Johnston saw a record-tying 15-game hit streak snap in game one. She now shares the record with Lauren Dinsdale, who set the mark 10 seasons ago.

Samm Carroll and Sarah Thayer would get the only hits for the Tigers. Lauren Mahar (1-6) would take the loss, allowing four earned in 4.1 innings pitched. Gould allowed two hits in 1.2 innings in relief.

Skidmore would jump out to another lead in game two, as Popp drove in Roman-Johnston in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. The next inning, Maddie Nelson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving Skidmore a 2-0 lead. RIT struck back in the top of the fourth, as Laura Weintraub took a 2-0 pitch to dead center, cutting the lead in half (2-1). RIT would later tie the game on an error in the top of the fifth. In the seventh, a crucial Skidmore error would give RIT the 3-2 lead with one out. The Tigers would add an insurance run in the next at-bat, then eventually held off Skidmore in the bottom of the inning for the 4-2 final.

Skidmore was held to four hits in the second game, but drew six more walks. Roman-Johnston, Fishkin, Popp, and Nelson would tally the hits. Carilli (10-5) took the hard-earned loss, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings, striking out two.

Mahar (2-6) picked up the victory in relief for the Tigers, allowing just one hit over the final three innings, striking out four. Torie Adler got the start, allowing a pair of runs over four innings of work. Samm Carroll tallied three hits to lead RIT.

Skidmore will get right back to work tomorrow, hosting the University of Rochester in a late morning doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m.
