Baseball ends trip with sweep

FT. MYERS, Fla.—The Skidmore College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip with a 6-0, 11-6 sweep of Newbury College Saturday.
 
The Thoroughbreds bring a 5-4 record back North. The team is scheduled to open Liberty League play at home March 24 against Rensselaer.
 
In the first game, Jay Gamboa pitched five scoreless innings for the win. He allowed four hits, striking out seven and walking two. Sam Beck and Andrew Aikins each had a scoreless inning of relief.
 
Hayden Smith was 2-3 with a two-run single and a double. Shawn Klier was 0-1, but had a pair of RBI, including a sacrifice fly. Matt Chipkin added an RBI bunt single, while Patrick Geiger was 1-3 with an RBI double. Ryan Strickland capped the scoring with an RBI single.
 
In the second game, Newbury erased a 3-0 Skidmore lead with four runs in the bottom of the second to go up 5-3. Will Potter had an RBI single in the fourth and Sam Beck had a two-run single in the fifth to put the Thoroughbreds back up 6-5. Both teams scored unearned runs in the sixth.
 
Skidmore broke it opened with four runs in the top of the seventh. Strickland had an RBI single, Klier and Potter had RBI doubles, and Chipkin closed the rally with an RBI triple.
 
Aikins closed out the game with a six-out save, preserving the win for Jacob Berish. Aikins didn't allow a hit, walked one and struck out two. Berish went 3.1 innings in relief of starter Jonathan Kaiser. He allowed one unearned run on six hits.
