Megnia pushes Skidmore past Clark in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior attacker Eric Megnia scored the game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to its first victory of the season, a 9-8 win at Clark University, on Granger Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 1-1 on the season, handing the Cougars (2-1) its first loss.

Megnia and the Thoroughbreds capitalized on a man-up opportunity, scoring the goal with 2:11 remaining to get the personal hat-trick and the team victory. Freshman Zac Parker assisted on the game-winner.

Skidmore fought off a furious Clark comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in the final 1:08 to tie the game at eight, sending it into overtime.
 
Skidmore outshot Clark by a 45-34 margin, including a 31-20 edge in shots on net. Megnia's team-leading three goals came on just five shots. Senior Cody Legeza and freshman Jason Shlonsky each tallied a pair of goals, with freshman Alex Miller bagging a pair of assists. Miller also picked up three ground balls, and he and senior Jack McElgunn each caused three turnovers. Seniors Jack Curry and Ian Maag also got into the scoring column with a goal apiece, Seniors Ryan Warnock and RJ Caruso, along with junior Colby Farnham, added assists. Senior Chris Baughan picked up the victory in net, making 12 saves.
 
 
Jack Mandracchia, Quincy Milton III and Jack Pierce led the Cougars with two goals each. Pierce also added a pair of assists for a four-point afternoon. Nathan Maselek saved 22 shots in goal in the loss.

Skidmore was aggressive defensively, as Clark only converted on 16-of-26 clear opportunities and turned the ball over 25 times. The Thoroughbreds were an efficient 21-for-25.
 
Curry got the ball rolling for the Thoroughbreds in the game's first three minutes, scoring on an unassisted goal at 12:27. Clark tied the game a few minutes later when Maselek took advantage of an open net, firing a shot from the Cougars crease into the opposite net. Legeza tallied a pair of goals, one at the end of the first period, and one to begin the second, as Skidmore held a 3-1 advantage. Clark would tally a goal on the man-advantage with 8:58 on the clock to reduce the deficit to one (3-2).
 
Skidmore then went on a 4-0 run, getting three goals to end the first half with a 6-2 lead. Miller fed Megnia and Maag with goals, then Shlonsky tallied one of his own with 3:17 to go. Shlonsky punctuated the run with his second goal, beginning the second half with a commanding 7-2 lead.
 
Clark would score four straight to get within range. Mandracchia and Bobby Philbin would score to end the third with Skidmore leading 7-4, then Milton III and Pierce would begin the fourth with goals, as Skidmore held a narrow 7-6 lead. Megnia broke the Clark run on a Warnock feed with 6:58 to go, giving the Thoroughbreds the 8-6 lead. Milton III would score with 1:08 remaining for Clark to reduce the deficit to one (8-7). Exactly one minute later, Pierce would get one in to send the two combatants into overtime, where Megnia would play the hero.
 
The Thoroughbreds will return home on Saturday to host Plattsburgh at Wachenheim Field. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
