Skidmore ends semester with 4-3 win

CHARLESTOWN, Mass.—The Skidmore College hockey team ended the semester with a 4-3 road win over Suffolk University and a weekend New England Hockey Conference sweep.

The Thoroughbreds take a 6-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 NEHC record into the break. The Rams had their two-game win streak against nationally ranked teams snapped to fall to 4-7-0 and 2-6-0 NEHC.

Skidmore scored the lone first-period goal when Max Hegge ripped the net for his fourth goal of the season from Austin Rook and Corey Morgan at 8:56. Suffolk had a commanding 14-4 shot advantage in the stanza, but Thoroughbred goalie Brian Kowalski stopped all 14 shots to give the Thoroughbred offense a chance to get started.

The Rams tied it just 12 seconds into the second period with Nick Wardstrom's first goal of the season. Paul Vella put Skidmore back in front at 2:07 with Avery Steele and Jason Lem assisting. Suffolk came right back to tie it on a Brian Brooks goal at 4:51, leaving the score tied 2-2 going into the second intermission.

Tim Allen gave the Thoroughbreds a 3-2 advantage with his fourth of the season from Lem and Matt Muzyka at 1:53 of the third.

Will Steel added an unassisted goal at 10:02 that turned out to be the game winner. Suffolk pulled its goalie late on a power play, cutting the Skidmore lead to 4-3 at 19:02 on a Tommy Bishop tally.

The Thoroughbreds held on for the final minute to secure the win.

Suffolk outshot Skidmore 40-25. Kowalski improved to 2-1-1 with 37 saves. Michael Levine had 21 saves for the Rams.

The Thoroughbreds are off until a non-league home-and-home series with Hamilton College on Dec. 30 and 31. Skidmore travels to Clinton on Dec. 30 and plays a rare New Year's Eve home game at 4 p.m.
