Skidmore rallies for fourth straight victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College ice hockey team won its fourth straight game in thrilling fashion, scoring twice in the final period to earn a 2-1 victory over Hamilton at the Saratoga City Rink Monday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (8-5-1) closes out the 2018 calendar year with an 8-5-1 record. Hamilton falls to 4-5-1 overall.

After a scoreless first period, it was Hamilton that struck first on the Skidmore power play in the second. Taking advantage of a turnover on its own blue line, Jon Stickel found Ian Nichols on a 2-on-1, with Nichols finishing high past Thoroughbred starter Brandon Kasel for the shorthanded tally at 10:26.

Undaunted, Skidmore would rally to tie the game midway through the third period. Max Hegge would find Kyle DelMaestro on the right side, who sniped a hard shot past Hamilton goalie Sean Storr (29 saves) for his first collegiate goal at 11:56. Matt Wolf also added an assist as Skidmore cut its deficit in half. Just 1:21 later, Skidmore would capitalize on a Hamilton turnover, as Mike Gelatt and Paul Vella would find John Litscher on the other end. Litscher would tap home the eventual game-winner at 13:19.

Hamilton would pull its goalie in the final 1:26 of regulation in an effort to knot the game late. The Continentals had a breakaway chance on net with 28.7 seconds left, but Kasel made a glove save to deny the Nick Ursitti shot and preserve the win. The junior tallied 21 saves in the winning effort to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Skidmore out-shot Hamilton by a 31-22 margin, and would hold the Continentals to 0-for-5 on the power-play.

The Thoroughbreds will return to action on Friday, traveling to Utica for a 7 p.m. start.
