ONEONTA, N.Y. – A strong second-half performance pushed Oneonta past the visiting Skidmore College women's basketball team, as the Thoroughbreds fell by a 60-33 score in non-conference action at Dewar Arena Tuesday night.
Skidmore falls to 0-2 on the young season, while Oneonta wins its season opener.
Kate McCarney tallied six points to lead the Thoroughbreds.
Lilly Berg added five points and eight rebounds.
Taylor Ong (12) and
Toyin Koleoso (11) tallied double-digit rebounds. Every player tallied a basket in the balanced scoring effort.
Olivia Allrich led the Red Dragons with 11 points, while Alexa Amalbert tallied 10.
For the second straight game, Skidmore outrebounded its opponent, grabbing a 52-47 edge on the glass, but the Red Dragons shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field, holding Skidmore to 17.6 percent (13-for-74) shooting to earn the win.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the game's first six minutes, before Oneonta took its lead to five points (13-8). With 43 seconds left in the period,
Caroline Merguerian collected an offensive rebound off a
Clare Driscoll shot, laying it back up as the Thoroughbreds trailed 13-10 after one.
The second quarter was all Oneonta, as the Red Dragons shot 57 percent (8-for-14) from the field, outscoring the Thoroughbreds 18-9 to take a 31-19 lead into the half. From there, Oneonta outscored Skidmore by a 29-14 margin to pull away with the game.
The Thoroughbreds will head to Williamstown, Mass. to participate in the Williams Tip-Off Classic this weekend, beginning with a match-up against host Williams on Friday at 6 p.m.
