Thoroughbreds knock off #13 Williams in OT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Gabby Hyman scored the tying and winning goals to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 4-3 double overtime win against #13 Williams College Thursday afternoon at Wagner Park.

It was the third overtime game of the season for the 4-6 Thoroughbreds. Williams is 6-2.

Williams got on the board quickly when Meredith Wright found the far corner from Emma Ticknor 3:58 into the game. The Ephs kept Skidmore bottled up for most of the half with a 10-3 shot and 6-1 corner advantage. Skidmore goalie Elizabeth Coughlin had six first half saves to keep it 1-0 at the break.

The Thoroughbreds took advantage of their second corner of the game early in the second half to tie it. Marissa Folts kept the play alive, sending the ball toward the cage where Grace Florsheim tipped it in from the far post at 38:48.  Gabrielle Vaccaro scored her first collegiate goal from Folts off another corner to give Skidmore a 2-1 lead at 44:15.

Williams didn't waste any time, tying it up at 45:22 on Julia Cochraon's first goal of the season from Wright. The Ephs went in front at 52:47 when Simone Veale worked her way loose in front for a 3-2 lead. Libby Dolan assisted.

Earl in the second half, Hyman was denied on a breakaway by Williams goalie Abby Lloyd. With time running out on regulation, Hyman broke loose again down the left side and this time solved Lloyd to tie it 3-3 at 64:04.

Skidmore earned a corner with 5:55 to play in the second overtime. The Thoroughbreds weren't able to get a shot off, but a solid team effort kept the ball in the offensive end. Maraih Redler got the ball to Hyman who found the back of the cage through traffic for the game winner at 85:19.

Williams outshot Skidmore 18-9 and had a 12-6 penalty corner edge. Coughlin finished with 10 saves, including one in the first overtime. Emma Santucci had two saves in the first 35:00 for the Ephs, while Abby Lloyd had one save over the final 50:19.
