SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team had its best scoring performance of the season, tallying five goals in a 5-0 rout of Sage, in non-conference action on a wet Wachenheim Field Tuesday night.
Skidmore improves to 8-5-3 overall, while Sage drops to 4-10-1.
The Thoroughbreds dominated from the start, scoring in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Off a Skidmore corner kick, the ball deflected around and found
David Braman at the top of the box. Braman's shot was deflected by Sage goalie Mike Chiaravalloti, but the ball slipped under him into net, perhaps due to the wet conditions.
The Thoroughbreds would double up the score in the 27
th minute on a well-played set piece from about 35 yards out.
Shoyo Yanagihara fed the ball deep into the Sage penalty box, as
Ted Roach wisely headed the feed to his left to a charging
Kyle Barrett, who beat the goalkeeper to his left.
Sage had its best chance in the first half, off a set piece on the right wing in the 18
th minute. Giddel Alvardo launched a low pass to a cutting River Seybolt in front of net, who one-timed the feed just wide of the net.
Skidmore dominated the proceedings in the second half, getting its third goal thanks to a penalty kick opportunity by
Ben Caples in the 59
th minute. Caples stepped up to the spot and beat the Sage goalie to his right.
The Thoroughbreds would end the scoring on a pair of goals 4:25 apart. In the 78
th minute, off a long free kick opportunity from just inside of midfield,
Will Greening launched a high kick deep into the penalty box, as
Roman Toepler beat the Sage defense high, heading the chance past the goalie for his first career goal.
Just over four minutes later,
Hart Jamieson finished the scoring with a strike off a deflection inside the penalty box.
Sage had a pair of chances at net in the final eight minutes, but both shots went wide as the Thoroughbreds preserved the shutout.
Skidmore outshot Sage by a 23-10 margin, including an 8-1 margin in shots on net. The Thoroughbreds also earned 11 corner kick opportunities.
Sebastian Bosch made one save over 90 minutes, earning his sixth shutout of the season. Chiaravalloti made three saves in the first 73:28 for Sage, while Lucas Bourdeau played the final 16:32.
Skidmore finishes the regular season with a home matchup against Bard. The Thoroughbreds will honor the class of 2019 before the 2 p.m. contest.
