Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Thoroughbreds drop 1-0 decision to SLU

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – An early St. Lawrence goal held up as the Skidmore College men's soccer team fell to the Saints, 1-0 in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (7-5-3, 3-4-1 Liberty League) find themselves in a bit of trouble with one league contest remaining. The Thoroughbreds sit in seventh place, two points behind RPI for the final postseason spot. Skidmore needs to win in the league finale and RPI to tie or lose in order to make the playoffs. St. Lawrence (10-2-2, 6-1-1 Liberty League) will receive at least a share of the Liberty League regular season title, and will host with a win in the finale next weekend.

The Thoroughbreds nearly had an early goal, as Mike Park's attempt in the first two minutes was parried away by a St. Lawrence defender. The Saints nearly returned the favor in the 11th minute, as a St. Lawrence goal was wiped off the board due to the offside call.

After a number of runs by the Saints, they broke through in the 38th minute. Brendan McNamee, charging up the right sideline, played a low cross into the center of the penalty box, finding Charlton Kelly in stride. Kelly's shot beat Skidmore goalie Sebastian Bosch to his right.

Skidmore had a pair of golden opportunities to score in the second half, despite being outshot by an 8-4 margin. In the 68th minute, David Braman made his move up the right sideline, playing a high cross to a leaping Ben Caples, but the pass proved to be a touch high as the ball sailed out of play. Skidmore's best chance came in the 77th minute, when Stanley Langyintuo tried to set up Hart Jamieson with a short cross from the left wing. The ball got past Jameison, but Langyintuo corralled the ball, trying to shoot it low. Langyintuo's shot from in front of net was deflected away by SLU goalie Mike Smith, who would eventually gobble up the rebound.

The Thoroughbreds would get two more shots in the final seven minutes of play, but couldn't get the tying goal in net.

St. Lawrence held a 13-7 shot advantage. The shots on goal count was closer, as the Saints held a 4-3 edge.

Before Skidmore's Liberty League finale next weekend against Bard, the Thoroughbreds will wrap up the non-league portion of the schedule with a home matchup against The Sage Colleges, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
