Thoroughbreds stay alive with thrilling OT victory

Thoroughbreds defeat Clarkson 2-1, move into fifth place in Liberty League standings

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Isaac Myran helped to keep the Skidmore College men's soccer team alive in its playoff push, tallying a game-winning overtime goal to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 overtime victory over Clarkson, in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field on a windy Wednesday night.

Skidmore (7-4-3, 3-3-1 Liberty League) gets a crucial three points to push into fifth place in the league standings with 10 points. Clarkson (9-4-1, 3-3-1 Liberty League) moves into a tie with Skidmore, as each team has two league matches remaining.

Things did not begin well for the Thoroughbreds. Although Skidmore had a few good chances at goal, Clarkson would open the scoring in the 28th minute, as Stephen Kilmek fed Mack Walton for his third goal of the season.

The Thoroughbreds kept fighting, eventually striking in the 62nd minute. Isaac Myran plowed his way up the left wing, feeding Ben Caples in front of net. Caples would beat a final Clarkson defender, shooting past Clarkson goalie Riley McDonald.

Caples nearly ended it early for Skidmore in the overtime period, as McDonald had trouble corralling Caples' throw-in attempt. Caples would eventually take a low shot that was saved by the Clarkson goalie.

The Thoroughbreds would indeed strike minutes later, at the 93:14 mark. Ben Poole sent a long pass from his own end towards Myran, who fought past a Clarkson defender, making a move towards the center of net, pushing a low shot past McDonald as the sideline erupted in celebration.

Clarkson outscored Skidmore by an 16-10 margin, with Skidmore tallying three shots on target. Sebastian Bosch tallied five saves in the effort.

Skidmore will wrap the regular season with three consecutive home contests. The Thoroughbreds will host St. Lawrence on Saturday, at 3 p.m.
