Skidmore upsets Bowdoin in fall finale

BRUNSWICK, MAINE -- The Skidmore College women's tennis team finished the fall portion of the schedule in style, defeating Bowdoin 5-4 at the Pickard Tennis Courts Sunday morning.

It was the first dual match of the season for Bowdoin, ranked 14th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National poll. Skidmore (3-0), ranked 16th in the same poll, finishes the fall season undefeated for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.

After a grueling weekend of matches, with Risa Fukushige competing at the ITA Cup and the rest of the Thoroughbreds playing in the Bowdoin Invitational, Skidmore saved its best efforts for Sunday. The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action, as Fukushige, flying back from Georgia, teamed up with Renee Karchere-Sun to defeat Julia Marks and Devon Wolfe at first doubles by an 8-6 score. The freshman duo of Audrey SooHoo and Sofia Carlsson picked up the other point at No. 2, defeating Izzy Essi and Rachel Bercovitch 8-6.

In singles, Fukushige picked up her second win, defeating Marks in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1. Lily Feldman defeated Fleming Landau in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, and SooHoo defeated Sarah Shadowens 6-2, 6-4 to wrap up the match.

The team was all smiles after defeating Bowdoin on Sunday.

"Unbelievable finish to the fall season," said head coach Curt Speerschneider. "This team has been working so hard since August and they deserved and earned this win today. To do it after two grueling days of tennis and Risa traveling up from Georgia last night made it all the better a proved just how tough this group is. This team loves to compete. The spring season can't come soon enough."
