CANTON, N.Y. – The 14
th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team wins its fourth straight dual match to open the season, sweeping St. Lawrence in the season opener by a 9-0 score, in Liberty League action at the Newell Field House Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore (4-0, 3-0 Liberty League) has won its 23
rd straight match against Liberty League opponents, and is off to its best start since the 2015-16 season (started 5-0). St. Lawrence (1-1, 0-1) drops its league opener.
Rookies
Sofia Carlsson and
Audrey SooHoo got Skidmore on the board in doubles with an 8-2 victory at No. 2, over Katherine Apt and Maddie Nasch. At No. 3,
Jessica Ampel made her season debut, teaming up with
Lily Feldman to defeat Haley Sherrard and Grace van Tartwijk 8-3.
Risa Fukushige and
Renee Karchere-Sun defeated Caroline Reilly and Christina Ryan at the top spot by an 8-4 score to earn the doubles sweep.
Skidmore won all of its singles matches in straight sets to earn the sweep. Feldman finished an impressive 6-0, 6-0 sweep of van Tartwijk at No. 4, while SooHoo dropped two points in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Carly Jefferson. Fukushige and Karchere-Sun also had impressive performances at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Fukushige defeated Reilly 6-1, 6-3 and Karchere-Sun finished off Apt 6-1, 6-2.
Laura Swenson won her first dual singles match of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maddie Nasch.
Dea Koiava battled through the first set, but had a dominant second with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Ryan.
"Solid start to our spring," said head coach
Curt Speerschneider. "It's always nice to get some actual opponents on the other side of the net after a long time off. We competed well and earned a solid 9-0 over a quality team. We're making the right steps to be ready for some big matches in the coming weeks."
Skidmore travels to RIT in its next match on Saturday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m.
