Big second period carries #7 UMB past Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The 7th ranked UMASS-Boston Beacons broke open a one-goal game with five straight second period goals on the away to a 7-1 win over Skidmore College in NEHC hockey Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Thoroughbreds drop to 2-13-1 overall and 0-8-1 in NEHC play, while the Beacons are 12-4 and 7-2.
 
Skidmore goalie Brandon Kasel kept the Thoroughbreds in it early with 21 first period saves. Skidmore broke through late in the period when Adam Moodie fired a pass from behind the net to defenseman Quincy Gregg in the slot. Gregg buried it for his first goal of the season.
 
The second period was all UMB. Nick Albano tied it at 3:26 from just inside the blue line from Nolan Redler and Garrison Sanipass. Dakota Keene made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season at 8:10. Dominic Blad and Justin Holliday were credited with the assists. Cody Wickline tipped one in at 13:19 for a 3-1 lead. Sanipass had a power-play goal at 15:13 and Redler finished the period with his 16th of the season at 17:00.
 
The Beacons added a pair of goals in the third period for the 7-1 final. Colin Larkin had a power-play goal at :42 and Sanipass completed the scoring at 10:01.
 
Sanipass finished with two goals and two assists and Albano had a goal and three assists.
 
UMB fired 53 shots on the Thoroughbred net. Kasel had 30 saves over the first 40:00, while Brian Kowalski had 16 saves in the third period. Bailye MacBurnie had 10 saves over the first 46:24 for the Beacons, while Jordan Bustard stopped three shots over the final 13:36.
 
Skidmore will host Babson on Saturday at 4 p.m., while UMB travels to Hobart for a 4 p.m. game.
