#8 Red Hawks edge #9 Skidmore, 2-1 in OT

Montclair, NJ – Number eight Montclair State scored 3:04 into overtime to slip past ninth ranked Skidmore College,  2-1 in a matchup of Top 10 NFHCA ranked teams at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds are 3-2 after playing their fourth one goal and second overtime game of the season. The Red Hawks remain unbeaten at 6-0.

Senior goalkeeper Zoe McGuire was outstanding in goal with 13 saves for Skidmore, which kept the game close despite being outshot 23-3 in the contest. Montclair also held a 19-4 advantage in penalty corners.

McGuire made 11 saves in the first half as Montclair put forth 14 in the first 35 minutes of the contest. She made three in the first six minutes and then got help from Kayla Rose, who made a defensive save on a shot by Haslett at the 7:15 mark.

The Thoroughbreds pushed the ball back the other way and got the game's first goal. Emily Richmond picked up a loose ball in the circle on the left side and fired across inside the right post for her first of the season and a 1-0 lead.

McGuire made that lead hold up for the rest of the period with help from Meaghan Lynch who denied a goal with another defensive save with 13:40 left in the first.

Montclair broke through 4:04 into the second half taking advantage of a penalty corner. The Red Hawks capitalized as Kelly Watson inserted the ball up top on the left side to Amber Haslett who rocketed a shot into the back of the cage, knotting the game at 1-1.

Both teams played staunch defense over the next 20-plus minutes. Skidmore would get a chance to take the lead with 6:35 to go however MSU keeper Kaitlin Maguire stopped Rose on a shot at the left and then followed up with another save, this one against Sarah Winters. Skidmore's McGuire registered two more save in the final two minutes as the game headed into overtime.

McGuire denied Kaitlyn Struss a minute into the OT. Two minutes later as the Thoroughbreds tried to clear the ball, Meghan Mollanhan settled the free ball 25 yards out and flipped the ball into the circle to Struss who went in all alone and flipped the ball inside the right post for the game winner.

"Our defensive corner unit of Zoe McGuire, Meaghan Lynch, Kayla Rose, Miranda Davenport and Marissa Folts withstood constant pressure and played an amazing game," said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.

McGuire finished with a season-high 13 saves.
