POTSDAM, N.Y.—The 2017 Liberty League softball playoff field will come down to Sunday's final day of competition after Skidmore split with Clarkson Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Thoroughbreds won the first game 5-2 and lost a tough 3-2 second game in eight innings. Skidmore (17-21, 4-6) will need to sweep Sunday's doubleheader with Union (4-23, 0-10) to keep its playoff hopes alive. Clarkson (19-15, 6-4) finishes the regular season Sunday against league leader Rensselaer. It's possible that there could be four teams tied for the final two playoff slots.
Â
In the first game, Â clean-up hitter
Kristina Foley had her biggest game of the season, going 3-3 with three RBI, a stolen base, and a run.
Â
Foley got the Thoroughbreds on the board in the first inning when
Karly Fishkin singled, stole second and then scored on Foley's clutch two-out RBI single.
Â
The Golden Knights regained the lead, 2-1 with a pair of runs in the third.
Â
Skidmore scored four unearned runs in the fifth. Catcher
Maddie Nelson opened the inning by reaching first on a dropped third streak. The Thoroughbreds took advantage of the miscue to score four times. Foley had a two-run single for the inning's big hit.
Â
Amanda Carilli earned the win. She allowed one earned run on nine hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Â
Skidmore stranded nine runners in the extra-inning second game.
Lauren Fortunato reached base all four times with three of her team's five hits, a walk and two stolen bases. Both of the Thoroughbreds were unearned.
Â
Carilli (12-12) had another workman like performance, going 7 2/3, allowing three runs on 10 hits and one walk.
Â
Skidmore's regular-season finale at Wagner Park against Union starts at 1 p.m.
