Thoroughbreds sweep Union to clinch playoff spot

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College softball team overcame a four-run deficit on the way to a 9-6 win over Union College to complete the Liberty League sweep and clinch the league's final playoff spot. The Thoroughbreds won the first game 11-2 in six innings.

Skidmore completes the regular season at 19-21 overall and 6-6 in the league. The Thoroughbreds finished in a three-way tie for third with Rochester and St. Lawrence, but won the tiebreaker with a 3-1 record against the two teams. Union completes its season 4-25 overall and 0-12 in league play.

In the first game, Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Courtney Casey's two-run home run. That would be it for the Dutchwomen offense.

Skidmore used its own version of long ball to score four runs in the bottom of the first. Karly Fishkin drilled a two-run homer over the left field fence to tie it and Emily Popp took a 3-0 pitch well beyond the center field fence for a two-run homer of her own and a 4-2 lead.

The Thoroughbreds added three in the third. Jill Strileckis had an RBI double and later stole home. Mary Farrington had an RBI single for the other run.

Fishkin scored on a Popp sacrifice fly in the fourth to up the lead to 8-2. Kristina Foley ended the game with a three-run home run in the sixth for the 11-2 final.

Foley was 3-4 with three runs, three RBI, two doubles, and a home run.  Fishkin finished 2-3 with three runs and two RBI and Popp was 2-2 with two runs and three RBI. Amanda Carilli (13-12) settled down after the first inning allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Casey finished 2-3 with two RBI and a run. Kara Brown was 2-3 with a run. She pitched five innings in relief. Dana Dolinko started and finished the game, taking the loss.

The second game started well for the Thoroughbreds. Fishkin had another first inning home run, a two-run shot just inside the left field foul pole for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Dutchwomen took advantage of defensive miscues by Skidmore to score six runs on four hits in the third inning. Nikki Ditizio had a two-run double to key the inning.

The Thoroughbreds couldn't get anything going offensively until the fifth inning. Skidmore sent 10 players to the plate, scoring four runs on two hits and five walks. Fishkin and Lauren Fortunato had RBI singles with the other two runs coming on walks.

Skidmore added three insurance runs in the sixth. Lizette Roman-Johnston had an RBI single and Foley had a two-run double for the 9-6 final.

Roman-Johnston was 3-3 with three runs, a double, and an RBI. Fishkin finished 2-3 with three runs and three RBI and Fortunato was 2-4 with an RBI and stolen base.  Popp (6-9) got the win in relief of Carilli. She tossed 4.1 scoreless innings on three hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

For Union, Ditizio was 2-3 with a run and Casey went 2-3 with a run. Brianna Godlewski was 2-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Dolinko was tagged with the loss in relief.
