Thoroughbreds sweep Cazenovia 7-4, 10-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College softball team downed Cazenovia 7-4 and 10-2 in a non-league doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Wagner Park.
 
The Thoroughbreds move to 6-10, while the Wildcats drop to 2-8.
 
Skidmore got off to a quick start in the first game with three runs in the first. Lizette Roman-Johnston had a full-count RBI single, followed by a full-count RBI double by Lauren Fortunato. Fortunato later scored on a wild pitch for the third run.
 
Cazenovia's Kelsey Morgan powered one over the center field fence for her first home run of the season in the second inning. The Wildcats tied it 3-3 in the third on Kelsey Schuette's two-out, two-run single.
 
The Thoroughbreds responded with three of their own in the bottom of the third. Two of the runs came on a Kristina Foley two-run double. Foley later scored on an infield out for a 6-3 lead.
 
Emily Popp drove in the seventh run for Skidmore with a single in the fourth. Cazenovia added one in the sixth for the 7-4 final.
 
Roman-Johnston was 2-4 with two runs and a double. Amanda Carilli evened her record at 4-4, going 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and no walks. Popp came on in relief to earn her first save of the season. She gave up three hits, while striking out two.
 
Game two was more of the same. Skidmore led 3-0 after three innings. Popp had a two-run single in the first and an RBI single in the third.
 
Taylor Springer accounted for Cazenovia's runs with a two-run homer in the fourth, cutting it to 3-2.
 
The Thoroughbreds pieced together two runs in the fourth, including an RBI double by Morgan Grady.
 
Skidmore added four more in the fifth, three runs coming on a huge home run by Foley. Popp's RBI double accounted for the other tally. Fortunato drilled a solo shot in the sixth to end the game.
 
Popp was 3-4 with four RBI, while Fortunato was 3-4 with four runs, a triple, and the home run. Foley finished 2-2 with four RBI and two runs and Grady was 2-3 with an RBI.  Popp got the win, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
 
Skidmore is scheduled to play Castleton University on April 1 at 1 p.m.
