RUTLAND, Vt. – The fifth-seeded Skidmore College men's hockey team fell to fourth seed Castleton by a 7-2 score in the NEHC Quarterfinal at Spartan Arena Saturday night.
Skidmore wraps up its season with a 10-12-4 record, doubling its win total from a year ago. The Spartans improve to 11-9-6, and will travel to top-seeded Norwich next Saturday.
Mickey Foley and
Adam Moodie tallied goals for the Thoroughbreds, with
Anthony Bird adding the assist.
Jack McDonald made the start, playing in his 84th career game today, tying the program record for games played by a goalie. He now shares the mark with David Katz '90 and Scott Hook '93. The all-time leader in minutes played and save percentage stopped seven shots in the first 26:47 of regulation, before giving way to
Brandon Kasel. Kasel stopped 14 shots in the final 26:34 of play.
Brock Labelle knocked in a pair of goals, and added two assists. Otis Goldman tallied three points on two goals and an assist, and Kurt Johnson added a pair of goals. Simon Teodorsson wrapped up the scoring with a goal. Kevin Rosset, Troy Taylor, Bart Moran, and Nick Kovalchik added assists. Ryan Mulder stopped 39 shots in the victory.
Castleton opened the scoring at 13:51 in the opening period. Labelle took a shot from McDonald's glove side that he sent away. Goldman was alert on the rebound, beating McDonald high on the stick side. Each team killed two power plays in the first.
Castleton added their second goal 1:36 into the second period on a 2-on-1 break. Kovalchik fed Labelle on the right side and Labelle quickly fired a shot that beat McDonald high, getting just under the post. Labelle got his second of the game five minutes later, firing a shot from just inside the blue line. The Spartans pulled to a 4-0 lead, after Skidmore pulled its goalie on the power-play attempt. Johnson tallied a goal, shooting from the opposite blue line after the Castleton save.
With their backs against the wall, the Thoroughbreds answered with two quick goals in 27 seconds. Foley got the Thoroughbreds on the board with a blast from the face-off circle on the left side, his shot beating Mulder low glove side. Right after the faceoff, Bird fed Moodie, who beat Mulder at the doorstep, scoring his first goal of the season, cutting the lead in half.
Castleton answered 50 seconds later with a pair of empty net goals. The Spartans eventually tallied its final goal at even strength with 26 seconds left in the game.
Skidmore outshot Castleton 41-28 in the contest. The Thoroughbreds were unable to score on nine power play chances. The Spartans went 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Bird wraps up his Thoroughbred career 12th on the all-time scoring list with 94 points on 39 goals and 55 assists. His linemate,
Marc Cibelli, finished 16th on the all-time scoring list with 33 goals and 53 assists for 86 points. It was the final game for seniors Bird, McDonald, Cibelli,
Sam Bloom and
Connor Van Arnam.
