Second period blast carries #13 Hamilton over Skidmore, 5-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Hamilton College scored four second period goals, including three in 1:30 to break open a one-goal game on the way to a 5-1 non-conference win over Skidmore College, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

It was the first game of a home-and-home series between the teams. The Continentals will host the Thoroughbreds Sunday at the Clinton Arena in a 4 p.m. start.

Skidmore is 1-10-1, while #13 Hamilton is 6-2-1.

The Continentals scored the lone goal of the first period, when Tyler Bruneteau scored off a power-play goal off a rebound at 19:39.

Hamilton went up 2-0 on Nick Ursitti's sixth goal of the season at 5:11 of the second. Ursitti forced a turnover in the Skidmore end and took a shot just outside the faceoff circle that bounced up and over Thoroughbred goalie Brandon Kasel's shoulder.

Skidmore cut it to 2-1 on Paul Vella's first collegiate goal at 13:34 from Matt Bernot and Corey Morgan. Vella skated deep into the Hamilton goal, faked a pass and first the shot past an unsuspecting Evan Buitenhuis.

The Continentals responded with three quick goals to put the game away. Brandon Willett (15:39), Nick Ursitti (16:05) and Neil Conway (17:09) did the damage.

Hamilton outshot Skidmore 39-24. Kasel had 25 saves in the first 40 minutes for the Thoroughbreds. Brian Kowalski stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period. Buitenhuis recorded 21 saves over the first 51:44 for Hamilton, with Pete Negron stopping two shots over the final 8:16.
