BOSTON, Mass. –  The 15th ranked UMASS Boston men's hockey team broke open a 2-2 with three unanswered third period goals to beat Skidmore 5-2 Saturday in New England Hockey Conference action.
Skidmore is 0-6-1 overall and 0-5-1 in NEHC play, while the Beacons rise to 7-1 and 5-1 in the NEHC.
UMB took a 1-0 lead 5:55 into the first period, right after coming up empty on a 5:00 power play. Skidmore would tie the score for the first time as John Litscher netted his first goal of the year just four minutes later from Brandon Borges. The score would remain tied at 1-1 heading into the first intermission. Daniel Nachbaur would put UMB back out in front at the 8:16 mark. That goal would spark an offensive surge for the Beacons, as they peppered Skidmore's defense and goaltender Brandon Kasel. In what could have been an absolute blowout frame for the Beacons, the Thoroughbreds managed to weather the UMB storm.
Their efforts were rewarded in the final three seconds of the second frame, as they tied the score at 2-2 thanks to a Corey Morgan goal. Borges and Kayser Raei assisted.
Looking as if though Skidmore was going to have the advantage in the third stanza, UMB came out firing and dug deep to earn the three goals, including two empty netters. Â
On the day, Kasel combined for 32 stops, while Bailey MacBurnie improved to 6-0 on the year after making 20 saves.Â
The Thoroughbreds return home Nov. 25 to face Fredonia State at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Skidmore Invitational.
