SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A second-half offensive explosion propelled the No. 12 Skidmore College field hockey team, as the Thoroughbreds eventually ran away with a 7-1 victory, on a warm and windy Sunday at Wagner Park.
Skidmore has won two in a row to increase its record to 8-4. Thomas falls to 1-10.
Before the contest, Skidmore honored its seven seniors: goalie

Erin Maloney, midfielders
Seeley Fancher,
Sadie Lewis, and
Kelsey Denby, and forward
Caroline Saros.
Thomas put an early scare into the No. 12
th team in the country, scoring early off a penalty corner in the 12
th minute. With Kelsi Faulkingham setting up the chance, a Thomas pass deflected off a Skidmore defender, and Tiffany Weeks scooped up the rebound to fire the shot in cage.
Skidmore looked to have a clear shot at tying the contest up at one in the 17
th minute, as
Mary Beth Zahnleuter looked to launch a high shot into the far corner of the net, but a leaping glove save by Thomas goalie Leah Kruse kept Thomas ahead.
Fortunately for the Thoroughbreds, the lead would not last. On a penalty corner of their own in the 27
th minute,
Marissa Folts' shot hit the post, but the Thoroughbreds kept possession.
Miranda Davenport found Saros in traffic, with her shot beating the goalie glove side. Skidmore eventually took the lead with 26 seconds remaining in the opening half, as Meghan Lynch found Folts deep in the penalty arc for the go-ahead goal.
Skidmore found its stride in the second half, tallying five second half goals to pull away from the Terriers. Davenport scored one of her own in the 49
th minute, picking up a rebound to make it 3-1 Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds would tack on three goals in a 5:18 span, starting in the 55
th minute.
Gabby Hyman tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season, off a rebound in front of the cage. In the 59
th minute,
Sarah Winters got on the board, as a feed from Folts caught Winters right on the upper part of the stick, her serendipitous bounce sliding by the goalie. Denby struck for the Thoroughbreds with her first goal of the season 1:39 later, as the defender tacked in the goal on a rebound off a Skidmore corner.
Skidmore would wrap up the scoring, with Saros tacking on her second of the game in the 61
st minute.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Terriers by a massive margin, 42-5. The 42 shots are a season high for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds also earned 23 penalty corners.
Elizabeth Coughlin returned to action and picked up the victory for Skidmore in relief, playing 33:30 between the first and second halves. McGuire got the start, making a save in 30:01 of action in the first half. Maddy Carré came on in relief for the Thoroughbreds, playing 6:29 in the second half.
Leah Kruse was busy in net for the Terriers, making 19 saves in 62:25.
The Thoroughbreds will continue non-league play, heading south to take on New Paltz Tuesday afternoon.
