Thoroughbreds fall to Vassar, 3-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Vassar pulled away with two late goals, as the Skidmore College women's soccer team fell to the Brewers 3-0 in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore falls to 2-7-1 on the year and 0-3-1 in league play, while Vassar remains unbeaten in the league at 3-0-1 and 7-2-3 overall.

The Brewers opened the game, thanks to an unfortunate bounce on a corner kick in the 26th minute. The corner kick hit off a Skidmore defender in the crowded box, with Vassar's Ashley Ferry able to get a foot on it to fall into the net.

Vassar nearly doubled the score in the 36th minute, with Rachel Chernet's rebound beating the Skidmore keeper, but junior midfielder Emily Mendes made a big save at the goal line, kicking the ball out of harm's way. On the other end, Skidmore would have its best scoring chance of the contest in the 37th minute, as junior midfielder Courtney Shaw launched a sliding shot in the box that hit the left goalpost, just inches away from a Skidmore goal.

In the second half, Skidmore would get another good chance to tie it up, as Vassar goalkeeper Fiona Walsh just got to a header by senior midfielder Jemimah Cochrane, on a cross from Shaw in the 64th minute.

Vassar scored its second goal in the 82nd minute, as a 35-yard shot from Rachel Chernet ricocheted off a Skidmore defender, the ball flying over the outstretched arms of Skidmore goalie Alyssa Rollins. The Brewers closed the scoring in the 89th minute, with Sara Seper scoring on a header in the box off a free kick.

Vassar outshot Skidmore by a narrow 12-8 margin and earned six corners to Skidmore's two. Rollins made five saves in net, including a pair of diving stops midway through the second half. Walsh picked up the clean sheet, making two saves.

The Thoroughbreds hit the road for the sixth time in eight contests, beginning a three-game swing at Ithaca on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
