Skidmore and Vassar battle to a 1-1 draw

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the second time in three games, the Skidmore College men's soccer team and Vassar played to a stalemate, as the teams fought through a 1-1 draw in Liberty League action at Gordon Field Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore still remains unbeaten in league play, in fourth place in the league standings with a 1-0-3 record and six points (5-1-4 overall). Vassar also remains unbeaten at 3-0-1 and 6-3-2 overall.

The rematch of the 2016 Liberty League Championship game lived up to its billing, as the two teams fought through a scoreless first half. Skidmore and junior midfielder Mike Park fired the first salvo in the 64th minute, on a long goal from distance. Off the free kick from about 40 yards out on the near side, Park curled the chance to the opposite corner of net, the ball falling above the keeper in the corner of the goal as the Skidmore bench erupted.

Vassar was able to knot it up just four minutes later, with Jonathan Bow and Mattie Mrlik finding Tyler Gilmore on a free kick chance of their own from just outside the box.

The teams battled through the extra session, with neither team getting a solid chance in the last 10 minutes of overtime.

Vassar edged Skidmore in total shots, 19-17, but Skidmore held the shots-on-goal advantage, 7-6. 34 combined fouls and eight yellow cards were issued in what was a physical contest between the two budding rivals.

Sebastian Bosch made five saves in net for the Thoroughbreds to preserve the tie. His counterpart, Will Marment, made six saves.

The Thoroughbreds return home for three straight games at Wachenheim Field. Skidmore will host Ithaca for the first league matchup between the two teams on Friday at 4 p.m.
