Thoroughbreds battle Ithaca to a 1-1 tie

Skidmore remains unbeaten in league play with a 1-0-4 record

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A second-half goal by senior midfielder Augustine Okoye pushed the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Ithaca in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field Friday afternoon.

Skidmore remains undefeated in league action with a 1-0-4 mark, and a 5-1-5 record overall. Ithaca's record improves to 1-3-1 in conference, 5-5-2 overall.

After trailing early, Skidmore was awarded its first corner of the game in the 61st minute. On a cross by Brennan Mitrolka, Ben Poole's header attempt was blocked by the Ithaca defense. Okoye eventually corralled the rebound, taking a low shot past the keeper for the goal.

The Thoroughbreds nearly struck first in a sequence of events in the 22nd minute. With Skidmore on the attack and with numbers, Kevin Santos pulled a shot from inside the box that was deflected by Ithaca keeper Max Lichtenstein. Okoye grabbed the rebound in front of net, but his attempt went just wide of the net.

Ithaca took advantage of the missed Skidmore chance, taking the lead five minutes later in the 29th minute. A corner attempt by Zach Lichtman found Nate Mansfield in the middle of the scrum in front of net, with his header getting by Skidmore keeper Sebastian Bosch.

Skidmore had a chance for the late winner in the 88th minute. Santos got by a pair of defenders, with only the keeper to beat near the edge of the penalty box. Lichtenstein aggressively met Santos, kicking his shot attempt away, as the teams eventually went to overtime.

In the extra period, Skidmore and Ithaca each tallied two shots, but it was the Bombers who had the best chance at goal late in the 100th minute. A shot by Max Berish took an awkward angle for the Skidmore goalie, but Shaun Franz cleared the chance at the goal line to keep Ithaca off the board.

Skidmore nearly doubled up Ithaca on the shot count, 30-16, while Ithaca earned an 8-5 edge in corner chances. Bosch made five saves to preserve the tie, while Lichtenstein made eight stops.

Skidmore will finish the weekend off at home, hosting RIT Saturday at 2 p.m. The Thoroughbreds will honor seniors Okoye, Santos, Mitrolka, Tim Spenser, Bryan Lonergan, and Jeremy Tenenbaum.
