BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team posted a season-best effort from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe, posting a 70-63 victory over Brooklyn College in nonconference play Saturday afternoon.
It was the final non-conference game in the regular season for the Thoroughbreds, as they improved to 12-7 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 14-5 as they drop their first game at home this season.
Skidmore was effective from beyond the arc, shooting a season-best 6-of-11 from 3-point range. They also made a season-best 24 free throws. Junior guard
Kelly Donnelly notched her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds, while also adding three steals and two blocks. Junior guard
Ari Fustini added 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior guard
Veronica Moceri added 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard
Haley English had an all-around effort with eight points, seven assists, and seven rebounds.
Forward Olivia Colbert led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while guards Karen Mak and Kailyn Richburg each added 12.
Skidmore jumped on Brooklyn College early, making five of their first six shots to open up a 13-0 run. The Thoroughbreds shot a scorching 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, capped off by a jumper by senior guard
Meaghan Flanagan to hold a 34-24 lead into halftime.
The Thoroughbreds stretched the lead to as many as 11 points in the third quarter, before the Bulldogs chipped away. A pair of free throws by Brooklyn forward Maya Ajee-Thomas reduced the deficit to 41-37, but Flanagan and Donnelly went a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe to stretch the lead back to double digits.
Skidmore held steady in the fourth quarter to quell the Brooklyn College comeback. With the lead once again at four, Fustini hit a pair of big treys to push the lead to 55-45 with 8:26 to go. From there, the Thoroughbreds shot well at the charity stripe to complete the victory.
The Thoroughbreds out-rebounded the Bulldogs by a 43-36 margin, and held Brooklyn College to 32.4 percent shooting in the contest.
The Thoroughbreds will return to Liberty League play when they travel to Bard next Friday, in a 6 p.m. start.
