Thoroughbreds fall late to St. Lawrence

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A late basket by St. Lawrence doomed the Skidmore College women's basketball team, falling 54-51 in Liberty League action on Tuesday evening.

Skidmore falls to 11-7 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Saints improve to 3-5 in conference play and 6-10 overall.

St. Lawrence forward Caroline Dalton scored on a layup with 59 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Saints a 53-49 lead. On the other end, sophomore guard Haley English converted on a pair of free throws to cut the lead in half with 39 seconds left. After a pair of missed Saints free throws, the Thoroughbreds had the chance to tie the game with 12 seconds left, but a layup attempt by junior guard Veronica Moceri just rimmed out.

St. Lawrence split a pair of free throws on the other end for the 54-51 lead, and English's last second shot from half court fell just short as the St. Lawrence players celebrated.

Moceri and junior guard Kelly Donnelly each tallied 14 points to lead the Thoroughbreds. English added 13 points on an efficient 5-for-8 shooting from the field, adding three steals.

Megahan Hynes and Cara Waterson each scored a game-high 15 points to lead St. Lawrence.

The Thoroughbreds raced out to a 10-2 run to start, but the Saints chipped away, eventually taking the 13-12 lead after the first quarter. Skidmore's defense turned it up in the second quarter, forcing the Saints to just 28.6 percent shooting from the field as the Thoroughbreds took a 29-23 led into halftime.

Skidmore took its largest lead of the game in the third quarter, leading 32-23 early on. The Saints chipped at the deficit, eventually taking a 42-41 lead on a jumper by guard Shayna Davner and leading by as many as four late.

Down 51-47, St. Lawrence attempted to dribble the ball up court on the rebound, but English and Moceri trapped the St. Lawrence ball handler, with English getting the steal and layup. Dalton eventually put the game away for the Saints with the lay-up with just under a minute remaining.

Skidmore shot 41.7 percent from the field in the contest, outscoring St. Lawrence in the paint by a 26-16 margin. The Saints outrebounded the Thoroughbreds 38-35.

The Thoroughbreds will take a break from league play, travelling to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on Brooklyn College on Saturday in a 1 p.m. tipoff.
