Soccer falls to top-ranked William Smith

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –  The Skidmore College women's soccer team fell in Liberty League play to No.1 William Smith, 8-0 on a cool, windy Friday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. The Thoroughbreds will host RIT on Saturday in a 2 p.m. start.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 3-3-1 overall, and 0-2-1 in league play. It is also the first loss at Wachenheim Field this season. William Smith improves to a perfect 2-0 in conference play, and 9-0 overall.

Kara Shue scored two goals, and added an assist, to lead the Herons, who are the top ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) weekly polls. Six different William Smith players tallied a goal.

Christina Sanzari led the Thoroughbreds with two shots, one on goal. The Herons held an 18-4 advantage on shots. Deidre Walsh led all goalkeepers with three saves, replacing starter Alyssa Rollins in the second half.

Sanzari nearly gave Skidmore the early advantage in the fifth minute. Her shot from inside the box was grabbed by a diving Veronica Romines for the save.

Evie Manning broke the tie for the Herons in the 22nd minute, scoring off a rebound in front of the net. Nearly four minutes later, Shue fed Lauren Randaccio on a two-on-zero break. The goalkeeper bit towards Shue, which allowed Randaccio the open net.

In the 27th minute, the Thoroughbreds got their second chance at goal, Shue later scored on a cross by Phoebe Wade to give William Smith the 3-0 advantage in the 30th minute.

Skidmore's best chance game on Sanzari's shot in the 64th minute. The curled shot from just inside the penalty box sailed just high of the post. The Herons put the game away with five second half goals, including a stretch of three goals in a three-minute stretch in the game's final six minutes of play.
