SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team couldn't overcome a second-half deficit, falling 1-0 to RIT in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field Saturday afternoon. The Thoroughbeds will head north, taking on St. Lawrence on Sept. 8.
Skidmore's record now stands at 0-3-1 in league play, and 3-4-1 overall. The Tigers improve to 2-1 in conference play, and 6-3-1 overall.
The lone goal was scored by RIT's Riley Yankowich and assisted by Caitlyn Daly in the 50th minute off a free kick from about 25 yards out. Yankowich received Daly's feed in the crowded penalty box, her header hitting the top corner of the post, before bouncing just past the goal line, despite a diving attempt to clear by Skidmore keeper
Alyssa Rollins.
The Thoroughbreds controlled possession for the first half, keeping the Tigers without a shot for the first 37:11 of game time. Skidmore had two big chances to take the early lead. In the ninth minute, a long through pass by
Emily Mendes found
Emma Basso, with just the keeper to beat. Basso shot wide, but RIT keeper Kelly Rogers made the early save. In the 15th minute, off an RIT foul,
Phoebe Martell-Crawford's free kick attempt from just over 30 yards found
Emily Saliterman, her resulting shot just high of the goal.
Skidmore outshot RIT 9-4, and earned five corners to RIT's one. Both teams recorded four shots on goal.
Christina Sanzari and
Jane Huber each tallied two shots to lead the Thoroughbreds. Rollins made three saves in net. Her counterpart, Rogers, made four saves.
