Men's soccer opens league play with 1-1 tie against Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team opened up Liberty League play with a 1-1 draw against Vassar, on a warm Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. It was the first league game for both squads. The Thoroughbreds will head to Western New York next weekend, taking on Hobart and RIT.

The tie leaves Skidmore with a 3-3-1 record overall. Vassar now sits at 6-1-2 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Austin Okoye scored his fourth goal of the season, off a low Nick Masiero cross in the 62nd minute. His header just cleared the goal line to give the Thoroughbreds the lead.

Just over 20 minutes later, Vassar tied it late. Off a Hayden Van Brewer throw-in, Mattie Mrlik finished low and to the right of the Skidmore keeper. Just a minute later, Skidmore goalkeeper Derrick Yam made a big diving save off a Vassar shot from outside the box to force overtime.

In the extra session, Alex Ricci had a chance to end it for the Thoroughbreds in the 96th minute, but Vassar keeper Matt Marcelino made the stop. Yam also made a big stop for Skidmore just 53 seconds into the second overtime period.

Vassar outshot Skidmore 21-10. Yam made a season-high seven saves to preserve the tie.
