Volleyball begins Liberty League schedule at Bard and Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y – Liberty League play begins for the Skidmore College volleyball team, as the squad heads to Bard and Vassar to take part in the Liberty League crossover on Sept. 23-24. The Thoroughbreds will face Union and RIT on Friday evening at Bard College, and take on Vassar and Bard at Vassar College.
 
Skidmore comes into the weekend off a perfect 4-0 showing at the Union/Sage Invitational. Marcella Familiar-Bolaños led the Thoroughbreds, recording a team-leading 112 digs (7.00 per set) while receiving 111 serves at a 0.919 percentage. Familiar-Bolaños also surpassed the 2,000 career dig mark during the first match on Saturday; she now has 2,041 total career digs and ranks fourth all-time in Skidmore history. She earned Liberty League honor roll honors for the weekend's efforts. This season, Familiar-Bolaños is eighth nationally with 261 total digs.
 
Katy Ehnstrom and Caite Canfield led the way offensively for the Thoroughbreds. Ehnstrom contributed team-highs of 42 kills and 20 blocks. Against New Rochelle on Saturday, Ehnstrom recorded 15 kills and seven blocks, both personal bests. Canfield matched a team high with 42 kills over the weekend, adding 42 digs. In the three-set win vs. New Rochelle on Saturday, Canfield recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs, adding three total blocks and two service aces. Both were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts. As a team, Skidmore leads the Liberty League with the lowest opponent hitting percentage. Opposing teams hit just .134 against the Thoroughbreds.
 
SCOUTING UNION (9-4, 0-0 LL)
Union also begins Liberty League play this weekend, after a 9-4 start. The Dutchwomen come off a weekend in which they swept through the Union Tournament, and defeated Oneonta on Tuesday. Union has conceded just one set in the last five matches. Ally VanDoren leads the team with 3.79 points per set, 149 kills, and 19 service aces. Union swept the season series last season, and has won the last six matches.
 
SCOUTING RIT (9-4, 3-1 LL)
RIT comes into the matchup with a share of the league lead after four matches, hosting the first Liberty League crossover last weekend. The Tigers have been hot, winning nine of the last 12 matches after a loss to open the season.
 
Sarah Szybist is one of the toughest offensive threats in the nation. She leads all of Division III with 5.58 kills and 6.51 points per set. Maria Simonetti is tied for 14th nationally with 30 service aces. RIT as a team is sixth nationally in team kills, and is fifth nationally in team assists. The Tigers swept the season series against the Thoroughbreds last season, and have won the last four matches.
 
SCOUTING VASSAR (7-6, 3-1 LL)
Vassar is also tied for the league lead after four matches. The red-hot Brewers have won seven of the last eight matches, after an 0-5 start to the season, where they played two top-25 teams, including a five-set thriller against eighth-ranked Carthage. Vassar leads the conference with 12.30 kills per set.
 
The triumvirate of Devan Gallagher, Jane McLeod, and Gabby Miller average a combined 10.48 points per set. Gallagher also is third in the conference with a .287 hitting percentage. Vassar won both games against Skidmore last season.
 
SCOUTING BARD (2-11, 0-4 LL)
Bard comes into the contest after dropping a three-set decision during the week against SUNY Poly on the road. The Raptors come into the second weekend of Liberty League play after an 0-4 start to the league season.
 
Sofia Koukia leads the Raptors with 3.08 points and 2.82 kills per set, which is sixth in the conference. Emily Anastasi is sixth in the league with 3.20 digs per set and 19 total service aces. Skidmore swept the season series against Bard, and have won the last 10 matches against the Raptors.
