NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Skidmore College Volleyball team started off the 2016 campaign in style, going 2-0 at the NYU Labor Day Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds topped host NYU 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 14-25, 25-18) in the opener, then pulled away late to defeat Plattsburgh 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17).
Skidmore will finish play in the Big Apple, taking on Rivier College (0-0) and Emerson (1-0) on Sunday.
Against NYU (0-1),
Allie Dillon recorded a double-double, tallying 10 kills and 19 digs. Macella Familiar-Bolanos led the way with 23 digs.
Brittany Osborn (12) led the way for the Thoroughbreds in kills.
Katy Ehnstrom, playing in her first collegiate match, finished with 11 kills.
After Plattsburgh (0-1) tied the contest at one in game two, Skidmore started the third set on a 7-1 run. The Cardinals battled back to within one late, at 24-23. Dillon thwarted the Plattsburgh threat with a big kill to give the Thoroughbreds the lead. From there, Skidmore hit .310 in the final set to pick up the victory.
Dillon (11), Ehnstrom (11), Osborn (10), and
Caite Canfield (10) each recorded double-digit kills in game two.
Bailey Hutchins directed the offense with 28 assists, and Familiar-Bolanos led the way once again with 20 digs.
