SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y – The Skidmore College volleyball team looks towards its final tune-up before Liberty League play begins, competing in the Union Tournament and the Sage Invitational on Friday, Sept. 16, and Saturday, Sept. 17, respectively.
Last weekend, the Thoroughbreds (3-5) went 1-3 in the Union Invitational, beating Oneonta 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-21) on Sept. 10. Skidmore hit a season-best .255 to pull away from the Red Dragons.
Caite Canfield, named to the Union Invitational's All-Tournament Team and Liberty League Honor Roll, led the Thoroughbreds with 11 kills, adding nine digs. She leads the team with 2.88 kills per set om 25 sets played. Three other Thoroughbreds –
Katy Ehnstrom (2.29),
Brittany Osborn (2.13), and
Caitlyn Sprinkle (2.00) average two or more kills per set.
Scouting College of New Rochelle (2-2)
The Blue Angels come into this matchup on a two-match win streak. New Rochelle defeated Sage 3-2 in the Oswego Tournament, and Rutgers-Newark 3-1 at home on Sept. 8. Skidmore will take on New Rochelle in both the Union Tournament as well as the Sage Invitational.
Padilla Rio Fabiol and Cristal Licaga lead the Blue Angel attack, with a combined five kills per set and 113 total points scored in 17 sets played. Melanie Lopez-Soto leads New Rochelle in assists per set (5.24), service aces (15) and hitting percentage (.571).
Scouting Mount Saint Vincent (2-3)
The defending Skyline Conference champions from 2015, Mount Saint Vincent will enter in its first tournament of the 2016 season after five matches. The Dolphins have won two of the last three matches, beating Baruch and The City College of New York.
Freshman outside hitter Tara Maloney leads the Dolphins in points per set (4.42) and kills per set (4.22). Her kills per set mark is 20th in all of Division III and leads all freshmen. The Dolphins have won four of the first five opening sets in their matches.
Scouting Sage (3-6)
Sage will enter the weekend coming off a 3-2 road victory against SUNY Poly. Sara Campolieta led the team with 18 kills and 14 digs in the win. She leads the team with 1.94 kills and 3.47 digs per set. Alyssa Nellis leads the Gators with 17 total blocks.
