Men's soccer shuts out Maritime 4-0

UTICA, N.Y.  – The Skidmore College men's soccer team exploded on offense, leading to its first victory of the 2016 season, a 4-0 triumph over SUNY Maritime at the Utica Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds will return home to face Plattsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.

Kyle Barrett scored his first collegiate goal, Austin Okoye led the team with two goals, and Brennan Mitrolka opened up the scoring for the Thoroughbreds. Kevin Santos finished with three assists. The Skidmore defense was stout, allowing just three Privateer shots. Derrick Yam needed little work, making two saves to clinch his first clean sheet of the season.

Skidmore got on the board on a strike by Mitrolka. On a free kick opportunity from about 30 yards out, the junior midfielder unleashed a strike which knocked off the crossbar, but still hitting the back of the net. Just a minute later, Skidmore doubled the advantage. A Santos pass found Barrett, and his defender fell, allowing the freshman to have an easy shot on goal.

Okoye made it 3-0 almost two minutes into the second half, when Santos fed Okoye from the edge of the box. Okoye played it in the middle of the box, his shot bouncing in off the crossbar. He scored his second in the 54th minute, off a feed by Santos deep in the penalty box.

The Thoroughbreds totaled 37 shots, 19 on goal, and forced eight corner kicks.
