Men's soccer falls to Baruch in Utica Invitational

UTICA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team opened play at the Union Invitational, falling to Baruch 1-0. The Thoroughbreds will conclude play with a matchup against SUNY Maritime on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Austin Okoye made his season debut, leading the Thoroughbreds (0-2) with six shots. Nick Masiero added four shots, as Skidmore dominated the shot count, by a 24-8 margin. Skidmore also had a 9-1 advantage in corners. Derrick Yam made three saves in net.

Yam's counterpart Xavier Carrillo was busy in net, making 12 saves for Baruch in his first clean sheet of the season.

Skidmore had a number of opportunities to score. In the 35th minute, Alex Ricci had a shot on goal, but his chip shot was just within the goalkeeper's reach. A few minutes later, Ricci was fed a ball in the penalty box, his shot just high of the net.

Baruch (1-1) scored with three seconds left in the half. Stanley Goldberg lofted a pass to Shaiem Morad, the resulting header getting past Skidmore keeper Derrick Yam. Skidmore ramped up the pressure in the second half and controlled posession, but was unable to get one by the Baruch keeper in the final third of the pitch.

Austin Okoye had a chance in the game's final seconds, but his shot from inside the box was saved by the Carillo as the clock wore down.
