Thoroughbreds fail to solve RPI defense

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The 19th ranked Rensselaer men's lacrosse team held Skidmore scoreless for the first 38:43 on the way to 12-4 Liberty League win Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds drop to 5-8 and 1-4, while the Engineers have won eight straight to move to 9-2 and 4-1.
 
Kevin Mulvey, Brendan Halloran, Conor Austin, and Colby Farnham each scored for Skidmore.
 
Breanainn McNeally, Partrick Finn, Jake Weidner, and Lucas Bastarache tallied two goals apiece for RPI. McNeally also had five ground balls. JT Kelly had a goal and three assists. Oliver Kaija won 12 of 17 face offs to go along with six ground balls.
 
The Engineers scored early and late in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. Patrick Hogan scored at 13:23 and Matthew Gilman found the net at 1:39.
 
The second quarter was all RPI with the Engineers extending the lead to 6-0 at the half.
 
After three more RPI goals in the third, Austin got Skidmore on the board with 6:17 to play from Eric Megnia. Mulvey scored his 30th of the season at 3:40 from Will Murphy to make it 9-2 at the end of three.
 
Halloran scored the third straight Thoroughbred goal to open the fourth quarter with Megnia assisting at 13:38 to cut it to 9-3.  The Engineers added three more before Farnham's third goal of the season at 1:43 for the 12-4 final.
 
RPI outshot Skidmore 41-26 and had a 31-19 ground ball advantage. The Engineers won 13 of 18 face offs.
 
Chris Baughan stopped 15 shots in goal for the Thoroughbreds. David Gibbs had 10 saves and allowed three goals over the first 57:56 for RPI. Parker Smith closed out the game with no saves and one goal.
 
Skidmore is at Trinity on April 19 at 7 p.m.  RPI is at Hamilton the same day at 6 p.m.
