Thoroughbreds close out regular season against Southern Maine

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Tyler Mathieu scored 19 seconds into overtime to give Southern Maine a 3-2 New England Hockey Conference win over Skidmore College Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
It was the regular season final for both teams. Skidmore (5-16-4, 5-10-3 NEHC) will be the seventh seed in the NEHC playoffs, traveling to second seed Babson College for a quarterfinal game on Feb. 20. Time is TBA.  Southern Maine (8-16-1, 5-13 NEHC) is the eighth seed and will head to top seed UMASS Boston on Feb. 20.
 
After a scoreless first period, Will Golden got the Thoroughbreds on the board with a power-play goal at 6:26 from Max Hegge and Luke Alletzhauser.   The Huskies tied it at 16:48 when Parker Sanderson scored an unassisted goal.
 
USM took the lead in the third on Blue Hayler's first collegiate goal, a short-handed tally at 11:31. Skidmore responded with Corey Morgan's fifth of the season, a power-play goal from Anthony Bird and Jack Even at 13:37.
 
The overtime goal was Mathieu's sixth of the season, with Sanderson getting the assist.
 
Ben Freiberg got the start in net for the Thoroughbreds, stopping 16 shots. Kyle Shapiro had 21 saves for Southern Maine.
