SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College hockey team ended the semester with a gritty 2-2 overtime tie with #7/9 Hobart College, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
Â
It was the second straight overtime game for the teams, with the Statesmen (7-2-1) winning Friday's contest 2-1.
Â
Skidmore (6-4-1) enters the break with its best record since the 2008-09 season. The Thoroughbreds are 2-2-1 against nationally ranked teams.
Â
Hobart got in front on Nick Bingaman's eighth goal of the season at 7:22 of the first.
Â
A controversial major penalty gave the Statesmen a 5:00 power play at 18:20.
Jack McDonald turned away three shots over the final 1:40 of the period to keep it 1-0 after one.
Â
The Statesmen continued to pressure the Thoroughbreds to start the second, but McDonald stopped seven more shots before Vincent Russo scored an unassisted goal off a scrap in front of the net at 2:50. McDonald appeared to have made the save, but play was allowed to continue and Russo picked-up his second goal of the season.
Â
Adam Moodie won the ensuing faceoff and caught Hobart goalie Alexander Connal out of position for an unassisted short-handed goal at 3:00. Inspired, Skidmore continued to apply pressure with
Corey Morgan firing one from the point past a screened Connal for a 2-2 tie at 17:17.
Connor Van Arnam and
Matt Bernot assisted.
Â
The third period featured end-to-end skating with Skidmore killing off two more Hobart power plays.
Â
In overtime, McDonald turned away three more shots to preserve the tie.
Â
Hobart had a slight 41-38 edge in shots. McDonald finished with 39 saves, while Connal had 36.
Â
