Thoroughbreds rally past #12 Norwich 3-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Connor Van Arnam's goal at 3:02 of overtime capped a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind win for the Skidmore College hockey team over Norwich University Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds are 4-2 overall and tied with the #12 Cadets (4-1-1) for first in the New England Hockey Conference at 4-1.

All Skidmore did was erase a 2-0 deficit in the final 2:53 of regulation, kill off a 5-on-3 that extended into overtime, and win its second straight game over a nationally ranked opponent.

After a scoreless first period, William Pelletier gave Norwich a 1-0 lead when he scored glove side high at 9:39 from Alec Brandrup.

Pelletier made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 15:10 of the third from Christian Thompson and Paul Russell.

The Thoroughbreds went on the power play at 16:57. With goalie Jack McDonald on the bench, it took Marc Cibelli 10 seconds cut it to 2-1 from Matt Wolf and Owen Campbell at 17:07.

Skidmore pulled McDonald again at 17:52 and the Thoroughbreds took advantage of the extra skater when Campbell scored the equalizer from Cibelli and Anthony Bird at 18:05.

A pair of ill-timed penalties at 18:17 and 19:39 gave the Cadets a 5-on-3 for :38 that extended into the overtime.

Skidmore managed to kill both penalties, with McDonald stopping all four shots he faced.

Norwich's Nick Pichette was whistled for a hooking penalty at 1:53 of the extra session, setting up Van Arnam's game winner. The defenseman fired a shot from just inside the blue line that sailed high past Cadet goalie Ty Reichenbach for the winner. Corey Morgan and Tim Allen assisted.

Norwich had a slight 34-33 shot advantage.

McDonald kept busy with 32 saves in the hard-earned win. Reichenbach finished with 30 saves for Norwich.

Skidmore is home again Saturday at 4 p.m. against St. Michael's. The Cadets travel to Castleton University for a 4 p.m. game.
