Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Santos goals help top No. 10 St. Lawrence, 2-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Kevin Santos scored two goals, including one 12 seconds into the contest, as the men's soccer team topped No. 10 St. Lawrence 2-0 in Liberty League action at Wachenheim field on a cool, wet Saturday afternoon. The win in part avenges the loss in the 2015 Liberty League Championship game.

The Thoroughbreds now sit alone at the top of the conference rankings at 2-0-2, and 5-4-2 overall. The Saints, the 10th ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) standings, fall to 9-2 overall, and 2-2 in league play.

Off the opening kickoff, a feed from the Skidmore half of the pitch found Santos from about 12 yards out. He made a move, beating the defender, and finished low to give the Thoroughbreds the early advantage.

It was one of just two shots for the Thoroughbreds in the first half, as St. Lawrence peppered the Skidmore defense with eight shots on goal. Charlton Kelly had the best opportunity for the Saints in the 40th minute, his header hitting the top part of the goalpost.

In the second half off a corner kick in the 62nd minute, the Saints' Brendan McNamee fired a rocket from just inside the penalty box. Skidmore goalkeeper Derrick Yam dove to his left, making the tough save. Just a minute later on a Skidmore free kick by Ben Poole, both Austin Okoye and the St. Lawrence keeper went for the ball about five yards out. Okoye got the tip, which went to Santos, who fired the shot in net for his second of the game.

From there, the Skidmore defense held strong, keeping the Saints off the board. The best chance came on another McNamee shot, this time from about 25 yards out. Just like the last shot, Yam had to extend to his left to make the diving save.

Yam made four saves to record his third shutout of the season, holding off a 16-5 shot advantage by the Saints.

The Thoroughbreds will host Williams on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
