SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –
Kevin Santos tallied his fifth goal of the season in the second half for the Skidmore College men's soccer team, who battled Williams to a 1-1 draw on a cold Tuesday evening at Wachenheim Field.
Skidmore's record stands at 5-4-3 overall, while Williams record stands at 6-2-2.
Down a goal after the first 45 minutes of play, Skidmore came out of the half aggressive. They were rewarded in the 66th minute, when, off a free kick opportunity at midfield,
Ben Poole fired the ball just inside of the penalty box.
Matt Schwab corralled it with his head, sending it to Santos. His shot from about 12 yards out lofted into the upper right corner of the goal, beating Williams goalkeeper Christian Alcorn.
The Ephs controlled play for the first few minutes of the game, getting on the board first in the 13th minute. Malcolm Moutenot's throw-in fell deep in the penalty box, about four yards from the goal line. Malcolm Singleton's subtle heel kick just fell into the lower left corner of the net, beating Skidmore goalie
Derrick Yam.
Williams nearly doubled the score in the 34th minute, when Chris Fletcher's shot from outside of the penalty box sailed just high of the net.
In the second half, the Thoroughbreds narrowly missed two shots to take a late lead. In the 77th minute,
Austin Okoye had a chance after a long through ball by
Ben Zieff found him outside of the penalty box. He attempted to fire it high towards net, but Alcorn made a big sliding stop, kicking it away. A few minutes later, it was Poole who fired a long through ball that found
Alex Ricci, his rising shot hitting the bottom part of the post.
In overtime, Williams had a few chances to win the game on a couple of late corner kicks, but the Skidmore defense held strong and parried away all opportunities at goal, leading to the draw.
Williams led the shot advantage 12-11, but Skidmore led with shots on goal, 4-3. Yam made two saves in net for the Thoroughbreds, and his counterpart Alcorn recorded three.
The Thoroughbreds will enjoy an eight-day break, resuming play on Oct. 19 at Rensselaer in a 7:30 p.m. start.
