TROY, N.Y. – The Skidmore college men's soccer team couldn't respond to a late goal, falling to Rensselaer 1-0 in Liberty League action on Wednesday evening.
The Thoroughbreds drop their first league game of the season, falling to 2-1-2 in the conference with eight points and 5-5-3 overall. Skidmore still has a game in hand against the league leaders. The Engineers move into a tie with Hobart for first place with a 4-2-1 record and 13 points in league play, and a 6-6-3 record overall.
RPI broke the scoreless tie in the 80th minute. Off a Skidmore turnover, Devon Baughen controlled the ball, flicking it over the defender, and scoring on a volley in the right corner of the net.
The Thoroughbreds controlled the early stages of the game and generated seven of the first eight attempts. In the eighth minute, senior
Brennan Mitrolka had a shot blocked by the RPI defense, before freshman
Matt Schwab pulled the follow up wide left.

Austin Okoye cut back to left foot and delivered a well struck shot that was held by Rensselaer keeper Matt LaBranche
Skidmore had another opportunity in the 26th minute, when junior
Kevin Santos found some space at the top of the penalty area and ripped a shot that skimmed just over the bar.
Santos led all Skidmore players with three shots, one on goal. Okoye totaled two shots, both on net.
Derrick Yam did not record a save in goal during the game's 90 minutes. LaBranche made three saves in the decision.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Engineers 11-6, and received three corner kicks to RPI's two.
Skidmore will continue its road swing with a matchup at Clarkson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
