Davenport's two late goals help No. 11 field hockey defeat RPI, 3-2

TROY, N.Y. - Skidmore College field hockey freshman forward Miranda Davenport scored two goals in the final 13:22 of regulation, leading to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Rensselaer in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds, the 11th-ranked team in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association national polls, improve to 2-0 in league play, and 10-3 overall. The Engineers fall to 0-3 in the conference, and 5-5 overall.

On a Skidmore penalty corner in the 57th minute, Meaghan Lynch found Davenport, who finished to tie the contest at two. A few minutes later at 62:58, Davenport got loose on a breakaway, beating the RPI goalie to take the lead.

Skidmore was able to hold on for the win, limiting the Engineers to just one shot over the final seven minutes.

RPI got the scoring started just 1:39 into the game, on a Mikaela DiBello shot. Skidmore was able to tie the game in the seventh minute, on Lynch's first goal of the season, the assist coming from Becca Halter

The Engineers took the lead in the 54th minute on a shot by Taylor Clink, before the heroics by Davenport. Davenport scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season in this game. Elizabeth Coughlin made four saves in goal to pick up her ninth victory of the season. Her counterpart, Rachel Kaufman, made a game-high six saves.

Shots were even at 14, with Skidmore having a 9-6 advantage with shots on goal. Skidmore also led on penalty corners, 8-2.

The Thoroughbreds will head north to face St. Lawrence on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
