Thoroughbreds drop league final at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 14th ranked Skidmore College field hockey team couldn't solve the 19th ranked William Smith defense in a 3-0 Liberty League road loss Sunday afternoon.

With one non-league game remaining, the Thoroughbreds are 12-5 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds finish league play in a 3-way tie with Vassar and Rochester.  The Herons (12-4, 5-1) finish first and will host one of two league semifinals on Nov. 2.  Skidmore will find out its semifinal opponent after the league officially breaks the tie.

William Smith took advantage of an early penalty stroke call to go up 1-0. Maura Moran converted the stroke at 18:52.

The Herons withstood Skidmore second half pressure to score two second-half goals in a 3:00 span to secure the win.

William Smith had a 14-9 shot and 9-5 penalty shot advantage. Elizabeth Coughlin had two saves for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore will close out the regular season on Oct. 27 at Oneonta with a 4 p.m. game.
