Thoroughbreds secure playoff berth with 2-1 win over #13 Rochester

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College field hockey team clinched its 20th straight postseason berth with a 2-1 Liberty League win over the University of Rochester Friday at Wagner Park.

The 14th ranked Thoroughbreds are 12-4 overall and 4-1 in Liberty League play. The 13th ranked Yellowjackets drop to 13-3 and 3-2.

With one league game to play, Skidmore is in a three-way tie for first with William Smith and Vassar. The tie will be broken Sunday, when the Thoroughbreds travel to Geneva for a 3 p.m. game with the Herons.

It was a big Senior Day win for the Thoroughbreds. Kelsey Denby, Leigh Fitzgerald, Becca Halter, and Krista Lamoreaux were honored in a ceremony before their final regular season home game.

Skidmore got in front early when Seeley Fancher scored her fifth goal of the season from Miranda Davenport at 8:27.

The game was played in the midfield for the next 30 minutes, with both teams stopping any offensive threats before they developed.

The Thoroughbreds nearly scored off a corner in the 43rd minute, but Colleen Maillie made a key defensive save to keep it a one-goal game. The Yellowjackets transitioned quickly with Maya Haigis feeding Claire Dickerson who rifled one off the backboard to tie it at 45:03.

Skidmore went back in front at 54:57 when Davenport deflected a Kayla Rose shot past UR goalie Kiran Sundaram for her seventh goal of the season and a 2-1 lead.

Rochester had a pair of chances off corners late, but Lamoreaux stuffed a shot for a defensive save at 67:56 and a final UR shot off a final corner went wide.

Skidmore had a 7-6 shot and 6-3 corner advantage. Elizabeth Coughlin improved to 11-3 with two saves for the Thoroughbreds. Gabrielle Cantley played the first half with no saves for Rochester, while Sundaram had one save in the second half.
