ANNADALE-ON-BARD, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team scored once in each half to pick up its first Liberty League victory on the season, defeating Bard 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
The Thoroughbreds get their second straight victory, improving to 5-6-1 overall, getting three big points in the league standings at 1-4-1. The Raptors fall to 1-5 in conference play and 7-8 overall.
Kelly O'Donnell and
Emma Basso scored the two goals for the Thoroughbreds, who have scored one goal or more in the last four games. Dee Walsh picked up the victory, making a save in the first 45 minutes.
Alyssa Rollins made four saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
Dylan McDonald tallied the lone goal for the Raptors off a penalty try in the 88th minute. Kelsey O'Brien made four stops in the first 45 minutes, while Chloe Ramos made two saves playing in the second half.
The Thoroughbreds had an early opportunity to take the lead. In transition, the ball was fed to Basso, who beat the goalie and rolled a low shot towards the net, the ball hitting the post, missing the goal by inches.
A few minutes later in the 13th minute, Skidmore cashed in on its chance. On a throw in, the ball was deflected away by the Bard defense. O'Donnell picked up the ball and fired a shot that beat the goalkeeper in the left corner for her first goal of the season.
After even play in the rest of the first half, the Thoroughbreds doubled the lead midway through the second half. Off a Bard turnover in the 71st minute,
Jacqueline Carames corralled the ball, firing a high shot that hit the crossbar, but stayed in play.
Emma Basso collected the rebound, firing the shot in the top left corner.
With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Bard was able to cut the deficit in half. Bard was awarded the penalty kick after a foul inside of the penalty box. McDonald's try went high, but got under the post, just to the left of Rollins.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Raptors 23-14 and held a slight edge on corner kicks, 8-7.
The Thoroughbreds return home to face Clarkson on Saturday at 3 p.m.
