SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team and Clarkson battled through the cold wet rain, resulting in a scoreless draw after two overtime periods at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds stretch their unbeaten streak to three games with the draw, their record standing at 5-6-2 overall, and 1-4-2 in league play. The Golden Knights' record now stands at 0-5-2 in league play, and 5-9-2 overall.
Skidmore held a 6-2 advantage in shots during the overtime period, leading to a 12-8 advantage after 110 minutes of action. Deidre Walsh started in goal for the Thoroughbreds, making two saves in the first half.
Alyssa Rollins picked up the slack, making two saves in the final 65 minutes of play. Their counterpart, Elyse Green, made eight saves for the Golden Knights.
Despite the scoreless result, there were a number of scoring chances for both teams. Clarkson had the chance to strike first in the 33rd minute. On a well-placed through ball by Paige Spittler to Giulia Mahoney up the far sideline, Mahoney struck a cross into the net towards Summer Gillespie, but was well defended by
Julia Leslie, thwarting the scoring chance as the ball rolled out of play. A few minutes later, Gillespie launched a curled shot from the top of the penalty box, that was well played by Walsh, making the tough save.
The game flipped for the Thoroughbreds in the second half, getting a few chances at goal. In the 56th minute,
Christina Sanzari took a rising shot from about 25 yards out. Green reached up and barely tipped it to herself to corral the save. In the 71st minute,
Elizabeth Schaeffer took a shot from the top of the box, the ball just missing the top near corner of the net high. In the final minute of regulation, Mahoney took a shot from inside the penalty box about nine yards out, but the shot was easily corralled by Rollins to force overtime.
In the first extra session, with the rain settling down a bit, the Thoroughbreds used the long ball to try to get the ball inside the penalty box.
Emma Basso took a shot from about 10 yards out in the 92nd minute, with Green diving out for the tip save. The Thoroughbreds corralled the ball, and took two chances on goal, but point-blank headers by Basso and
Kate Hicks were both stopped by Green.
With just 41 seconds left in the second overtime period, a last-ditch effort by Gillespie from just inside the penalty box was scooped up by Rollins, as she punted the ball towards midfield as the clock drained down.
Basso led all players with three shots on goal, and four total. For Clarkson, Gillespie tallied two of the four shots on goal.
The Thoroughbreds will finish league play on home turf when they square off against Capital Region foe Rensselaer on Thursday at 7 p.m.
