Women's soccer falls to Oneonta on late goal

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team could not respond to a late Oneonta goal, falling 2-1 to the host Red Dragons on Wednesday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-6-1 overall, while Oneonta improves to 7-3-4.

In the 84th minute, off an Oneonta corner kick by Seaver Lipshie, Laura Rolston headed it into the right corner of the net, despite the best efforts of Skidmore goalie Dee Walsh.

Courtney Shaw got the ball rolling for the Thoroughbreds, tallying her first goal of the season for the Thoroughbreds in the 12th minute. Shaw caused the Oneonta turnover, dribbling and shot low, beating Oneonta goalkeeper Emilie Mull.

Oneonta responded in a similar way in the 20th minute. Off a turnover, Amanda Roney took the ball, made a move and shot into the upper right corner for the goal.

Walsh kept Oneonta from taking the lead early in the second half, on a breakaway in the 60th minute. Oneonta attacker Jess Downin found herself all alone charging down the field on a breakaway. Walsh aggressively attacked the ball and slid in for the save, kicking the ball out of danger.

After Oneonta took the lead, the Thoroughbreds had a late chance at goal in the 89th minute. On a Skidmore break, Shaw looked poised to tie the contest, but her shot from about 15 yards out curled high above the net.

The Red Dragons held a 14-10 shot advantage, and a 7-6 advantage at shots on goal. Oneonta kept Skidmore without a corner kick for just the second time this season. Mull picked up the victory, making five saves. Alyssa Rollins made three saves in the first 45 minutes of play, and Walsh made two saves, playing in the second half.

The Thoroughbreds will return home to host Farmingdale State at Wachenheim Field on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
