Mickey Foley put home a rebound with 3:44 to play in regulation to give the Skidmore College men's hockey team a 2-2 tie with 13
th ranked Norwich University in New England Hockey Conference play Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
Â
The Thoroughbreds (4-13-4, 4-7-3 NEHC) win the season series against the Cadets (13-7-2, 8-5-2) for the first time since the teams began playing in 1998. Skidmore beat Norwich 4-0 on Nov. 20.
Â
Neither team found the net in a fast-paced first period.
Â
Skidmore took a 1-0 lead at 6:10 of the second when
Marc Cibelli hit the top corner over the extended glove hand of Norwich goalie Ty Reichenbach for the game's lone power-play goal.
Anthony Bird and
Connor Pelkey assisted. The Cadets scored twice in the final minute of the period to go in front 2-1.  Payton Baldillez high shot from in front caught the inside of the crossbar for his second of the season from Andrew Sullivan and Paul Russell at 19:06. Dmitry Ermakov's dribbler got past
Jack McDonald at 19:58. It was his first of the season with Kevin Salvucchi assisting.
Â
Neither team generated much offense for the first half of the third period. The Thoroughbreds didn't get their first shot on goal until the 13:30 mark, with the Cadets blocking six shots up to that point. Skidmore finally solved the Norwich D when Foley patiently scored off a
Quentin Campbell shot at 16:16 to send the game into overtime.
Â
Both teams had opportunities, with the Cadets sending one off the cross bar and Salvucci getting stymied by a quick McDonald save. The Thoroughbreds had a pair of shots off scrums in front, but Reichenbach held up to preserve the tie.
Â
Norwich outshot Skidmore 32-27. McDonald had 30 saves, while Reichenbach stopped 25 shots.
Â
Skidmore was 1-7 on the power play, while the Cadets were 0-4.
