Field hockey rolls to 8-0 win against Utica

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Senior forward Dani DeGregory produced eight points and freshman forward Gabby Hyman netted a hat trick to lift the 11th-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to an 8-0 non-conference win against Utica, Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The Thoroughbreds, who avenged last year's 4-1 loss at Utica, move to 5-2, while the Pioneers fall to 3-7.

Skidmore controlled play from start to finish, outshooting Utica 36-6 and owning a 18-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Hyman put the home side in front 4:35 into the contest, collecting a long ball from DeGregory at the top of the circle and tucking a shot inside the far post.

Shannon Sebor made it 2-0 2:06 later, tipping home DeGregory's shot from a penalty corner.

Hyman pushed the Thoroughbreds lead to 4-0 at the half with two goals in 2:41. She dribbled past two defenders and slid a shot under a charging Kells Casey for her second goal of the contest and jammed in a rebound from a scramble to complete her hat trick.

DeGregory tallied her first of the game 3:42 into the second half on a feed from Krista Lamoreaux and converted on her own rebound just under five minutes later for her 10th goal of the season.

Kayla Rose collected her own rebound and scored from close range to make it 7-0 and DeGregory capped the scoring in the 51st minute, dribbling in from midfielder before tucking in a one-handed shot from a tight angle.

Thoroughreds goalkeeper Elizabeth Coughlin stopped all five shots she faced, earning her first collegiate shutout. Casey made 12 saves over the first 43:28, including 10 in the first half, while Samantha Whitehouse stopped nine shots in the final 26:32.

Skidmore returns to the road Wednesday, Sept. 30, taking on #4 Middlebury at 6 p.m.
