POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior midfielder
Emily Saliterman's goal in the 54th minute proved to be the difference in the Skidmore College women's soccer team's 1-0 Liberty League win over Clarkson, Saturday afternoon in Potsdam.
The Thoroughbreds, who recorded their second straight conference shutout, improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights go to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The play in the first half was incredibly balanced as the two teams jockeyed for position. Each team registered four shots, but neither was able to capitalize as the game went in to halftime at 0-0.
Saliterman finally provided the breakthrough eight minutes into the second half to put the visitors in front. After Skidmore goalkeeper Deidre Walsh stopped a Golden Knights scoring opportunity with her lone save of the frame the Thoroughbreds countered quickly.
Shelby Hanlon slipped a through ball to Saliterman, and she calmly slotted home a shot on the breakaway for her team-leading fourth tally of the season.
The Thoroughbreds nearly put the game away 20 minutes later, but Clarkson goalkeeper Anna Demasi made two big saves, denying another Saliterman breakaway opportunity.
The Golden Knights looked to attack late but they could not find a way past a stifling Skidmore defense, as the Thoroughbreds held on for the 1-0 win.
Skidmore finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots with both teams taking five corner kicks. Walsh stopped three shots, earning her third shutout of the season, while Demasi finished with six saves.
Skidmore, which has scored one goal or fewer in 16 consecutive games, goes on the road to take on RIT Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
